Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam kicked off his spiritual journey in India with a heartfelt visit to the iconic Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. On Friday, he offered prayers at the sacred site, joined by Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel. The moment highlighted the strong cultural ties between India and Mauritius, drawing plenty of attention online.
Photos shared by Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on X captured Ramgoolam and his wife in deep prayer at the temple. Jaiswal posted, “PM Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam of Mauritius offered prayers at the sacred Kashi Vishwanath Dham in Varanasi. A visit reflecting the deep cultural and civilizational bonds that unite India and Mauritius.”
The evening before, Ramgoolam soaked in the mesmerizing Ganga Aarti on the Varanasi ghats. Jaiswal shared more pics, writing, “Experiencing the sacred connect with the Holy Ganga. PM Ramgoolam of Mauritius witnessed Ganga Aarti at Varanasi today. This spiritual experience symbolises the timeless bonds of faith and tradition that bind India and Mauritius.”
This temple visit and Ganga Aarti come as part of Ramgoolam’s eight-day official trip to India. He met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi on Thursday, where they discussed boosting ties in key areas like infrastructure, healthcare, digital technology, energy, and maritime security. The leaders also touched on regional and global issues to strengthen their partnership.
After the meeting, PM Modi posted on X: “Earlier today, welcomed Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam to Varanasi. His coming to Kashi becomes even more special considering the cultural significance of this city and the strong cultural linkages between India and Mauritius. We reviewed all aspects of bilateral cooperation and discussed regional as well as global issues. We agreed to deepen cooperation in infrastructure, healthcare, digital technology, energy, maritime security and more.”
During a joint press conference with Modi, Ramgoolam praised India’s unwavering support over the years. He said Mauritius has gained a lot from India’s expertise in health, education, capacity building, renewable energy, infrastructure, and maritime security. “The welcome we have received, I believe, no other Prime Minister has ever received and I am glad it is in your constituency. I can understand why you are elected in such huge numbers,” Ramgoolam added. “Over the years, India through its various governments has accompanied Mauritius in its journey toward progress and development. We have benefited from India’s generous assistance and expertise… India’s support continues to make a tangible difference in improving the quality of life of Mauritians.”
The visit underscores the deep-rooted India-Mauritius relations, blending spirituality with diplomacy in the holy city of Varanasi.
