Mexico’s government is putting lottery winnings to good work for its citizens abroad. On September 15, a special National Lottery draw raised funds to help vulnerable Mexican migrants, especially those in the United States facing tough times.
The draw, called “Mexico with an M for Migrant,” brought in sales of 338.5 million pesos—about $18.4 million USD. After paying out prizes, the net proceeds came to 115.9 million pesos. National Lottery chief Olivia Salomon shared these figures, noting how the event honors migrants who send money home to support their families and communities.
Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente explained that the money will fund six key initiatives. These aim to beef up Mexico’s consulates with better legal aid, humanitarian help, and emergency support. Plans include providing legal representation, visiting detention centers, adding more staff in busy areas, and aiding during natural disasters.
De la Fuente stressed transparency: “We’ll carry out these actions with quarterly evaluations and public reports to keep everyone informed.”
President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted the biggest need. “Our top priority is covering bail for our compatriots,” she said. “It’s often too expensive for them to manage alone.”
The government jumped on board with the draw earlier this month, holding it at 4 p.m. on September 15. A single ticket gave players a shot at winning up to 25.5 million pesos—around $1.42 million USD—while supporting migrant protection efforts.
Lottery director general Salomon added that President Sheinbaum specifically directed the funds toward stronger consular support. This comes at a time of uncertainty for Mexicans living abroad, ensuring they get the help they need.
