UN Chief Urges Global Action for Peace Amid Rising Conflicts
In a heartfelt call from New York, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres pushed for stronger efforts to build peace in a world torn by growing conflicts. Speaking at the annual Peace Bell ceremony at UN Headquarters on Friday, he highlighted how peace remains the core mission of the United Nations, yet it’s facing serious threats today.
Guterres painted a grim picture: conflicts are spreading fast, civilians bear the brunt of the violence, and basic human rights along with international laws are under attack. These scenes, he said, shame our shared humanity. The event sets the stage for the International Day of Peace on September 21, with this year’s theme focusing on "Act Now for a Peaceful World."
"Peace doesn’t just happen by chance," Guterres stressed. "It takes courage, compromise, and real action to make it happen." He urged world leaders to silence the guns, boost diplomatic talks, safeguard civilians, and stick to the UN Charter. Tackling root causes like inequality, exclusion, hate speech, and climate change is key, he added. Investing in prevention, dialogue, and trust-building is essential too. Plus, we need to back peacebuilders—especially women and youth—who lead the charge for hope on the ground.
UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock joined the conversation, addressing the crowd amid ongoing global wars. She asked a pointed question: Would the world see fewer conflicts without the United Nations? Her answer was a resounding no. "This isn’t the time to quit," she said. "It’s the moment to push even harder."
As conflicts rage from Ukraine to the Middle East and beyond, Guterres’ message on global peace efforts resonates strongly. The UN’s role in promoting international peace and security has never felt more urgent, calling on everyone to act now for a better tomorrow.
