Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has raised alarms about the ongoing deadlock in global nuclear disarmament efforts. He warned that recent Israeli statements hinting at possible nuclear weapon use in the Gaza Strip could lead to serious consequences.
Speaking at a high-level UN meeting to mark the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, Abdelatty slammed Israel’s policies of starvation and forced displacement of Palestinians. He called them shocking breaches of international law and humanitarian standards.
The event took place on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York. Abdelatty renewed Egypt’s push for every country to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), especially in the Middle East. He sees this as the best way to shield the region from nuclear dangers.
He pointed to a key 1995 UN resolution that calls for a Middle East free of nuclear weapons. Abdelatty noted that this resolution was crucial in making the NPT permanent.
Abdelatty highlighted why this international day matters: it spotlights how nuclear weapons threaten world peace and security. Egypt stands firmly behind calls from the Non-Aligned Movement, African Group, and Arab Group to wipe out this danger for good.
He reminded nuclear-armed nations of their duties under the NPT to break down their arsenals in a clear, irreversible way. With 15 years gone since the last major NPT review produced a final plan, Abdelatty urged real action now to boost the chances of success at the upcoming 11th NPT Review Conference.
The remarks come amid rising tensions in the Middle East, where nuclear disarmament remains a hot topic. (/WAM)
