The Indian government rolled out new AI rules today as part of the IndiaAI Mission, a push to make artificial intelligence safer, fairer and more responsible across every sector.
It comes just before the India‑AI Impact Summit next year, signalling India’s intent to lead global discussions on AI governance.
The guidelines spell out seven ethical principles and six key governance pillars, along with a step‑by‑step action plan that covers short‑, medium‑ and long‑term goals. They give clear, practical advice to businesses, developers and regulators on how to keep AI transparent and accountable.
MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan said the framework keeps people at its core and uses existing laws whenever possible. Principal Scientific Adviser Ajay Kumar Sood highlighted the “Do No Harm” ethic, stressing a mix of innovation sandboxes and risk‑mitigation tools inside a flexible regulatory space. “IndiaAI will inspire other nations, especially in the Global South,” Sood added.
MeitY’s Additional Secretary Abhishek Singh noted that the draft passed through wide public consultation and a careful review. “We want AI that is accessible, affordable and inclusive, while building a trustworthy, responsible ecosystem that fuels growth,” he said.
During the event, winners of the IndiaAI Hackathon for Mineral Targeting were announced.
IndiaAI, the mission’s implementation arm, aims to democratise AI benefits, boost India’s tech leadership, boost self‑reliance and protect the public from harmful uses of AI.
