IDF pushes deeper into Gaza City, targeting Hamas stronghold: ‘No other choice’

Israeli forces are pushing deeper into Gaza City, zeroing in on a key Hamas base as soldiers battle militants on the surface and in underground tunnels. IDF spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin shared these updates on Sunday, highlighting the intense ground operations.

“Hamas has revealed its real plan: using its own people as shields to drag out this conflict,” Defrin said. He stressed that IDF troops are working around the clock to rescue hostages, break up Hamas’s terror groups, and create a safer Middle East for everyone.

In the last week alone, Hamas has shown its disruptive tactics. The group fired at a UN team, hijacked UN vehicles to block a new aid road, and even robbed four UNICEF trucks at gunpoint, stealing baby formula needed by thousands of infants, according to Defrin.

Hamas also keeps blocking civilians from escaping war zones, putting Gaza residents at risk instead of protecting them, he added.

To protect non-combatants, the IDF has launched major efforts to warn people and guide them to safety. Soldiers send voice messages, drop leaflets, text alerts, and make phone calls urging evacuations.

At the same time, the military has set up a humanitarian zone in Khan Yunis and is building out support in southern Gaza. This includes field hospitals, water lines, desalination plants, and steady supplies of food, tents, medicine, and medical gear.

Defrin pointed out that tons of aid sit ready at the Kerem Shalom crossing, waiting for the UN and other groups to pick it up and get it to Gazans directly. “Israel is making sure civilians stay out of the crossfire and get food, shelter, and medical help,” he said.

So far, more than 550,000 people have fled south from Gaza City, the IDF reports. Divisions like the 162nd, 98th, and 36th are now active in Hamas’s main strongholds.

With the Jewish New Year approaching, Defrin noted that 48 hostages remain captive under Hamas control. “Their ordeal is a key part of this war that we won’t end until they’re back home. We have no choice,” he said.
