Donald Trump said on Thursday that both Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of his Gaza peace plan. The announcement came after a three‑day indirect talk session in Egypt where negotiators from each side met with U.S. and regional allies.
Trump posted the news on his Truth Social platform, calling the deal “historic” and the biggest breakthrough in the war that has raged in Gaza for more than a year. He said the plan stops fighting, frees all hostages in Gaza, and lets Israeli troops withdraw to a new line. The move aims to open the way for a “strong, durable, everlasting peace.”
The 21‑point plan, according to Trump, will see Hamas release 20 living hostages and the bodies of 28 others. In return, Israel would pull most of its forces out of Gaza, stop strikes on the enclave, and start large‑scale humanitarian aid. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the agreement as a national and moral victory and called it a “diplomatic success.” He reaffirmed that Israel will keep pushing until every hostage is home.
Hamas also backed the deal but warned that Israel must immediately withdraw troops, allow aid to enter Gaza, and exchange prisoners for all hostages. The group stated it will not let hostages go free until a lasting ceasefire is guaranteed and the war will not resume. How far the parties have agreed on tougher points—like disarming Hamas or installing a provisional government—remains unclear.
The conflict began when Hamas launched an attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, killing 1,139 people and taking 251 hostages. Israel’s subsequent offensive has killed at least 67,183 Palestinians in Gaza, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The United Nations says that more than two‑thirds of those verified as dead were women and children.
Key figures in the negotiation are the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, who helped broker the agreement. The deal could signal a turning point for the Gaza war, halting violence and allowing aid to reach civilians who have struggled with shortages of food, water, and medical supplies for months.
