Israel’s National Security Minister calls for crushing of Palestine as UK, Canada, Australia recognise state

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir strongly condemned the UK and Canada’s recent recognition of a Palestinian state, calling it a dangerous reward for terrorism. In a fiery post on X, Ben-Gvir demanded immediate action, including applying Israeli sovereignty over Judea and Samaria—also known as the West Bank—and completely dismantling what he labeled the Palestinian terror authority.
Ben-Gvir, a hardline figure in Israel’s government, announced he plans to push a formal proposal for this sovereignty move at the next cabinet meeting. “The recognition by Britain, Canada, and Australia of a Palestinian state as a prize for the October 7 murderers requires urgent countermeasures,” he wrote, vowing to act quickly.
The backlash comes amid reports that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer might announce his country’s formal recognition of Palestine as soon as today. Israeli leaders see this as ignoring the chaos caused by Hamas in Gaza, where hostages remain captive and Israeli families grieve losses from the group’s attacks.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed the criticism through his spokeswoman, Shosh Badrosian, during a brief news conference. She quoted Netanyahu as saying Israel won’t “commit suicide” just to satisfy Europe’s political agendas. “He’s made it clear that nations disregarding the utter devastation Hamas has brought to Gaza, Israel, our soldiers, families, and hostages won’t push us into self-destruction,” Badrosian told reporters, citing Sky News.
Netanyahu has slammed the move as “absurd” and a direct boost to terrorism. Israel has repeatedly opposed similar recognitions by Western countries, arguing they undermine peace efforts and reward violence.
To counter these developments, Netanyahu heads to New York this week for the UN General Assembly. There, he’ll make Israel’s case directly as some nations prepare to voice support for Palestinian statehood.
