Saudi Arabia and Pakistan have taken a big step in their friendship by signing a Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement. This pact means that if one country faces aggression, the other will treat it as an attack on both. It’s all about standing strong together for security and peace.
The agreement was signed in Riyadh on Wednesday during a state visit by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He was invited by Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman. This builds on their nearly 80-year-old partnership, rooted in brotherhood, Islamic solidarity, and shared defence goals.
The joint statement highlights how the two leaders want to boost defence cooperation and create a united front against any threats. Sharif also passed on warm greetings to Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz and thanked the Crown Prince for the gracious welcome to his delegation.
In return, the Crown Prince wished Sharif good health and prosperity for Pakistan’s people. The leaders held detailed talks at Al-Yamamah Palace, joined by high-level delegations from both sides. They discussed their historic ties and ways to deepen strategic relations.
Sharif’s team included big names like Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Army Chief Asim Munir, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik, and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi.
Back home in India, the Ministry of External Affairs is keeping a close eye on this Saudi Arabia-Pakistan defence pact. Officials said they’ve noted the reports and know it formalizes a long-standing arrangement. “We will study the implications for our national security as well as regional and global stability,” the ministry stated. India remains focused on safeguarding its interests and ensuring all-round security.
This new defence agreement between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan could reshape alliances in the region, and everyone’s watching how it plays out.
