Former Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje pays courtesy visit to new VP CP Radhakrishnan

In New Delhi, former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje made a warm courtesy visit to the newly appointed Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman, CP Radhakrishnan, on Saturday. The meeting took place at the Vice President House, highlighting the growing camaraderie in India’s political circles.

Just a day earlier, on Friday evening, CP Radhakrishnan officially took charge as Rajya Sabha Chairman. President Droupadi Murmu administered his oath at Rashtrapati Bhavan, marking a smooth transition in this key parliamentary role.

After the swearing-in, Radhakrishnan honored India’s freedom struggle heroes by paying floral tributes at memorials for Mahatma Gandhi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, and Chaudhary Charan Singh. He then headed to the Parliament House Complex, where Union Ministers, Deputy Chairman Harivansh, and Rajya Sabha Secretary-General welcomed him with open arms.

At the complex, Radhakrishnan paid respects to statues of legendary national leaders and freedom fighters who shaped India’s journey to independence and growth. To kick off his tenure on a green note, he planted a sapling right there. He entered the main Parliament House Building through the historic Shardul Dwar and formally assumed his duties as Chairman.

The event drew top political figures, including floor leaders from various parties, Union Ministers like Kiren Rijiju, Arjun Ram Meghwal, and L Murugan, along with Deputy Chairman Harivansh and Secretary-General PC Mody.

Looking back at the Rajya Sabha Chairman election, turnout was impressive—767 out of 781 MPs voted, hitting 98.2%. Out of these, 752 ballots counted as valid, with 15 invalid, which set the majority mark at 377 first-preference votes.

The NDA alliance started with support from 427 MPs on paper, but things got interesting when 11 lawmakers from YSRCP backed Radhakrishnan too. In a twist, the NDA candidate grabbed 14 more votes than anticipated, fueling talks of possible cross-voting from opposition ranks.

On the flip side, 13 MPs chose to sit out the vote. That group included seven from Biju Janata Dal (BJD), four from Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), one from Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and one Independent MP. As Radhakrishnan settles into his new role, all eyes remain on how this dynamic leadership will steer the Upper House forward.
