India-UAE Ties Strengthen: Focus on Defence, Aerospace, and Space Tech
Union Minister Piyush Goyal shared exciting updates from his ongoing visit to the UAE, highlighting how the two nations are ramping up cooperation in high-tech areas like defence, aerospace, and space technology. Speaking at a press conference in Abu Dhabi, Goyal revealed that the UAE has shown keen interest in deepening ties with India in these cutting-edge sectors.
Goyal pointed out the successful rollout of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in the UAE, making digital payments smoother for Indians there. He added, "Today, we discussed two new investment areas—defence and aerospace. The UAE also expressed strong interest in space technology collaboration."
Joining the discussions was Pawan Goenka, President of IN-SPACe, India’s space regulator. Goyal noted, "Pawan was with us and shared insights on India’s position paper and our vast potential in the space sector. The UAE is really excited about partnering with us here."
On the financial front, Goyal highlighted a major breakthrough in India-UAE financial cooperation. For years, India pushed to station an Income Tax officer in the UAE to boost transparency and speed up information exchange. "I raised this in the last High-Level Task Force on Investments (HLTFI) meeting, and the UAE agreed quickly. Now, our officer is based at the embassy, helping resolve financial matters faster," he said.
This comes after the 12th Meeting of the India-UAE High Level Joint Task Force on Investments (HLJTFI) in Mumbai back in October 2024, where both sides explored more ways to grow their partnership.
Goyal also celebrated a special moment for India-UAE relations. India’s Ambassador to the UAE, Sunjay Sudhir, just received the UAE’s second-highest civilian honour. "This award is a huge pride for our nation. It shows Sunjay’s outstanding efforts in strengthening our bilateral ties over the past three years," Goyal said. He emphasized how these successes will boost India’s economy and benefit its people.
Goyal is on a two-day visit to the UAE, building on the strong India-UAE friendship that’s expanding in trade, tech, and more.
