Iran has executed a 27-year-old man convicted of espionage for Israel’s foreign intelligence agency, Mossad, according to Iranian state media.
The man, identified as Aghil Keshavarz, was put to death on Saturday after being found guilty of spying for Israel, cooperating with what Iranian authorities call the “Zionist regime,” and photographing sensitive military and security sites. The judiciary-linked Mizan news agency said the sentence was carried out after being upheld by Iran’s Supreme Court and following what it described as the completion of legal procedures.
“The death sentence for Aghil Keshavarz … was carried out after confirmation by the Supreme Court,” Mizan reported, adding that he had maintained “close intelligence cooperation” with Mossad.
According to Iranian officials, Keshavarz was arrested between April and May in Urmia, a city in northwestern Iran near the Turkish border. Authorities described him as an “agent” of Mossad and said the court was presented with his confession during the trial.
Who was Aghil Keshavarz?
Keshavarz reportedly studied architecture in Iran. He was arrested in May while allegedly taking photographs near a military headquarters in Urmia, about 600 kilometers (371 miles) northwest of Tehran.
Iranian authorities accused him of carrying out more than 200 intelligence-related missions for Mossad across multiple Iranian cities, including Tehran. According to Mizan, those assignments allegedly included photographing targeted locations, planting tracking devices, conducting opinion polling, and analyzing traffic patterns along specific routes, all under instructions from Mossad handlers.
He was later convicted and sentenced to death, a ruling that Iran’s Supreme Court upheld.
Iran frequently conducts closed-door trials in espionage cases, and defendants often have limited access to evidence or legal transparency, according to human rights groups.
In October, Iranian authorities executed another individual convicted of spying for Mossad in the city of Qom, though the person’s identity was not publicly disclosed.
Iranian officials say at least 11 people have been executed for espionage since a 12-day conflict in June, during which Israel carried out airstrikes inside Iran that killed nearly 1,100 people, including senior military commanders and nuclear scientists. Iranian missile attacks in response killed 28 people in Israel, according to Israeli officials.
Tensions between Iran and Israel remain extremely high, with espionage accusations and executions continuing to draw international scrutiny and concern from human rights organizations.
