Shocking Religious Harassment of Christian Girl in Pakistan School Sparks Outrage
In a heartbreaking case from Pakistan’s Punjab province, a young Christian fourth-grade student named Maryam Hidayat is facing repeated bullying and pressure to convert to Islam at her school. This disturbing incident has ignited anger among human rights activists and minority rights groups, highlighting the growing challenges for religious minorities in Pakistan.
The harassment happened at a Government Elementary School in Kalar Abadi, Gujranwala city. According to the Voice of Pakistan Minority (VOPM), a key group fighting for minority rights, Maryam’s classmates have targeted her because of her Christian faith. Her family says the girl has endured verbal abuse and coercion for weeks, leaving her scared and upset.
VOPM reports that the family complained multiple times to the school authorities, but no action followed. Instead, they now face threats of expelling Maryam if they keep speaking out. "This isn’t just one bad incident—it’s a sign of deeper religious intolerance in Pakistan’s schools," VOPM stated. "Minority students, especially girls like Maryam, deserve a safe place to learn without fear of discrimination or forced conversion."
The group points out that such cases of religious harassment in schools are on the rise, putting vulnerable children from Christian and other minority communities at risk. They stress that systemic neglect is making education a nightmare for these kids, who just want to study in peace.
VOPM is calling for urgent steps. They want the Punjab Education Department and Ministry of Human Rights to launch a fair investigation right away. Authorities must hold the bullies and negligent school staff accountable to protect minority students across Pakistan.
This story has drawn widespread condemnation from citizens, activists, and global human rights watchers. VOPM urges civil society, media outlets, and international organizations to step up and spotlight the threats to religious freedom in Pakistan. As they put it, "The time to act is now—let’s ensure every child feels safe in school, no matter their faith."
