Bangladesh’s ruling Awami League slammed police and rival party members for attacking its peaceful march in Dhaka. The party said the police, working with opponents such as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), launched a “wave of mob violence” against its leaders and activists.
At least 131 Awami League leaders and affiliate members were taken into custody by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Tuesday as they led flash processions across the capital. The arrests came after police reportedly set up roadblocks that turned into violent clashes.
The Awami League said many protesters were seriously injured and that some were even blocked from getting medical care. Its spokesperson added that a handful of members had been abducted, with “ransom demands” reportedly made for their release. Officers allegedly disappeared activists without due process, sparking outrage.
“We condemnd this mob terrorism and unlawful arrests,” the party said. It charged that state‑backed police and political cadres are using violence to settle scores and frighten the public, while making it impossible for the party to defend itself or campaign openly.
The party urges investigators to arrest the fighters, provide immediate medical treatment to the wounded, and release all unlawfully detained leaders and activists. It warns citizens to stay alert against any plot that could undermine the nation’s development achievements under former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The Awami League maintains that its struggle is a fight for democracy and people’s rights, and calls for a fair political environment free from police brutality and political persecution.
