Nepal announces Rs 1.5mn relief for Gen Z protest martyrs amid historic political shift

Nepal’s government is stepping up to support families hit hard by the recent Gen Z protests. After the country’s biggest youth-led uprising, they’ve rolled out a relief package for those who lost loved ones in the chaos.

Home and Law Minister Om Prakash Aryal shared the news after a key Cabinet meeting on Monday. Each family of the martyrs will get Rs 1.5 million in total aid. That breaks down to Rs 1 million in direct cash support and Rs 500,000 to handle funeral and other costs.

The Gen Z movement kicked off on September 8 and 9, sparked by a government ban on 26 social media platforms. What started as peaceful marches against censorship and corruption soon turned into widespread unrest across Nepal. The violence forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to step down.

Tragically, the protests led to 72 deaths—59 protesters, 10 prisoners, and three police officers. Over 1,300 people got injured, and right now, 283 are still in hospitals nationwide.

The money will flow through the Ministry of Finance, with help from the Home Ministry or local district offices. Beyond cash, the government promises free medical care for everyone hurt in the Nepal Gen Z protests. For the victims’ families, they’ll arrange transport back home, even using helicopters for hard-to-reach areas, and cover cremation rites.

This youth uprising, driven by Nepal’s under-30 crowd fed up with corruption, nepotism, and job shortages, feels like a game-changer in the nation’s politics. Young organizers used apps like Instagram and Discord to rally without relying on old-school political parties—a fresh twist compared to past movements.

In a big move, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki took over as interim Prime Minister on September 14. She’s Nepal’s first woman in the role. In her debut speech to the nation, Karki honored all those killed as martyrs and vowed to deliver justice and real accountability.

As Nepal heals from the turmoil, these relief efforts show the government’s trying to mend fences. But the bigger calls for change in the system? They’re still hanging in the air, waiting for action.
