In Washington, South Korea’s new ambassador to the United States, Kang Kyung‑hwa, took the oath on Monday and immediately promised to boost the Seoul‑Washington alliance. She said the partnership is the “foundation” of the pragmatic diplomacy that President Lee Jae Myung’s government pursues.
At the Korean Embassy’s inauguration ceremony, Kang presented her credentials to Monica Crowley, chief of protocol at the U.S. State Department. During the meeting, she pledged to act as a “bridge of communication” between Seoul and Washington. The ambassador wants to keep dialogue open with U.S. lawmakers, academics and the media, and she’ll work closely with the Korean community here.
Kang highlighted that the alliance is turning into a “future‑oriented comprehensive” partnership built on three pillars: security, economy and cutting‑edge technology. She will use every tool at the embassy’s disposal to address trade and other bilateral issues, especially as U.S. President Donald Trump plans a visit to South Korea for the upcoming APEC summit.
Previously, Kang served as South Korea’s foreign minister from 2017 to 2021 under President Moon Jae‑in. She arrived in the United States on Saturday and is already set to strengthen ties on top of the challenges facing the region.
