North Korea has firmly declared itself a nuclear weapons state, locking this status into its national law forever. The country slammed the United States for pushing its outdated demands for North Korea’s denuclearization during a recent international meeting.
In a strong statement from its permanent mission to the UN office in Vienna, North Korea blasted the US for criticizing its nuclear program at a session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). “We strongly denounce and reject the US’s provocative act that shows its unchanging hostile intentions toward the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” the statement said, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). It also warned of serious fallout from these actions.
North Korea pointed out the irony: While the US calls its nuclear weapons “illegal,” Pyongyang accuses Washington of weakening global nuclear non-proliferation efforts through its own massive nuclear buildup. “Our status as a nuclear weapons state, now permanently set in our supreme law, is irreversible,” the statement added. North Korea vowed to keep opposing any efforts to change this stance.
This comes as North Korea ramps up its nuclear and missile programs, ignoring calls for talks from the US and South Korea. Just earlier this month, leader Kim Jong-un visited a research institute where engineers unveiled a powerful high-thrust solid-fuel engine. He announced it would power the upcoming Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), boosting the country’s weapons tech.
Tensions between North Korea and the US remain high, with Pyongyang showing no signs of backing down on its nuclear ambitions.
