North Korea’s Kim Jong-un joins Putin and Xi at military parade, first such gathering in 66 years

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un made a rare and historic appearance in Beijing, standing alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin and China’s President Xi Jinping at a big military parade. This is the first time in 66 years that leaders from North Korea, Russia, and China have gathered together at such an event.

The parade took place at Tiananmen Square, marking China’s 80th anniversary of its victory over Japan and the end of World War II. Kim, dressed in a black suit and gold tie, arrived early, walking across the red carpet and greeting Xi Jinping. The Chinese leader welcomed him with a handshake and friendly gestures, showing a strong sense of camaraderie. Putin also joined the welcoming, walking on Xi’s right, with Kim on the left, as they headed to the main stage.

The three leaders stood together at the parade’s start, sharing conversations and smiles. Their gathering is seen as a sign of their growing alliance and unity amid ongoing global tensions, especially with the United States. This marks the first time since 1959—when North Korea, China, and the Soviet Union’s leaders last marched together—that these three socialist countries have come together like this.

During the parade, Xi Jinping talked about Chinese progress and a vision of peace and development, emphasizing China’s commitment to peaceful growth and building a shared future with the world. China also showcased its military strength with the latest weapons and well-trained troops, sends a message of growing military power.

For Kim Jong-un, attending this major international event is a significant step. It’s his first time representing North Korea at a large global gathering, and many see it as an attempt to strengthen ties with China and boost his international image. Kim’s recent meetings and agreements with Russia, including a defense treaty, indicate close military cooperation. However, due to Russia’s focus on the Ukraine war, some experts believe Kim may now be looking to China for more economic and diplomatic support.

South Korea’s intelligence agency suggests Kim’s visit aims to improve North Korea-China relations and secure Chinese help to stabilize his regime. Some analysts also think Kim might want to use China as leverage in future talks with the United States.

Kim arrived in Beijing a day earlier aboard his private train, accompanied by his daughter Ju-ae, who is believed to be his successor. Rumors have circulated about possible separate meetings with Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin. Yet, chances of a formal three-way summit remain uncertain.

This unexpected meeting highlights the changing dynamics of international diplomacy, especially among countries that often challenge Western influence. While the world watches, North Korea, China, and Russia are sending a clear message: they stand together on the global stage.
