Seoul – North Korean leader Kim Jong‑un met Russia’s Deputy Security Council Chairman Dmitry Medvedev on Saturday to talk about making the two countries’ alliance stronger.
Kim said the visit marked a chance to turn the “fresh high‑level relationship” between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and Russia into a full‑blown strategic partnership. He urged the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) and the United Russia party to deepen cooperation and hold more exchanges.
Medvedev welcomed Kim’s comments and praised the “bravery” of North Korean troops that he said are fighting alongside Russia in the Ukraine war. He said that their support shows the “solid and invincible alliance” that both governments have built.
The meeting came during a week of celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the WPK. Medvedev was one of several foreign leaders invited to the party’s anniversary events, alongside Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Vietnamese leader To Lam.
In a joint statement with the WPK, United Russia said it would “firmly support” North Korea’s measures to boost defence capabilities. While the statement did not spell out the details, experts suggest it could be a nod to North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.
Earlier, Kim had told Russian President Vladimir Putin that the alliance between North Korea and Russia would continue to grow. The two countries are already expanding military cooperation amid Russia’s war in Ukraine.
