US President Donald Trump shared some warm words about his bond with India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a press conference in London. Speaking alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday, Trump highlighted their strong India-US relationship and a recent birthday call that brought the leaders even closer.
Trump, wrapping up his UK visit, fondly recalled chatting with Modi. “I’m very close to India. I’m very close to the Prime Minister of India. The other day, I wished him a happy birthday. We have a very good relationship. He put out a beautiful statement too,” he said with a smile.
The call happened on Tuesday, marking Modi’s 75th birthday and their first phone conversation in months. Trump reached out personally to extend his greetings, strengthening the India-US ties that both leaders cherish.
Modi responded on X (formerly Twitter), calling Trump his “friend” and expressing gratitude. “Thank you, my friend, President Trump, for your phone call and warm greetings on my 75th birthday. Like you, I am also fully committed to taking the India-US Comprehensive and Global Partnership to new heights. We support your initiatives towards a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict,” Modi posted.
Trump echoed the positivity on Truth Social, describing the talk as “wonderful.” He wrote, “Just had a wonderful phone call with my friend, Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I wished him a very Happy Birthday! He is doing a tremendous job. Narendra: Thank you for your support on ending the War between Russia and Ukraine!”
This friendly exchange coincided with key trade developments. On the same day, US Assistant Trade Representative Brendan Lynch met India’s chief trade negotiator Rajesh Agrawal in Delhi for discussions on boosting India-US trade. Both sides called the talks “positive,” signaling more opportunities ahead in the growing economic partnership.
Trump also touched on global issues during the press conference, stressing unity against Russia. He said he’s open to stronger actions, but only if European nations step up too. “I’m willing to do other things, but not when the people that I’m fighting for are buying oil from Russia. If the oil price comes down, very simply, Russia will settle,” he added, pushing for a collective approach to end the Ukraine conflict.
These moments highlight the robust India-US friendship under Trump and Modi, with trade talks and shared goals on peace taking center stage.
