Bhubaneswar – The Union Government has told the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over an investigation into a ₹multi‑crore scam that emerged in Odisha’s Sub‑Inspector recruitment exam.
The decision comes after Odisha Police’s Crime Branch uncovered large‑scale irregularities in the 2024 Combined Police Service Examination (CPSE). During its probing, officials suspected that the corruption might spill over into other states, namely Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal, and that an inter‑state criminal gang could be involved.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi asked the central government to bring in the CBI. Acting on his request, the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions issued a notification on Tuesday, saying the central move follows the Odisha Government’s consent dated 31 October 2025.
Under the notification, the CBI can investigate and take all necessary actions related to the case registered on 1 October 2025 at the CID‑CB Police Station in Cuttack. The investigation covers violations of several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 and the Odisha Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024.
The CPSE‑2024 exams, originally scheduled for 5‑6 October 2025, have now been postponed indefinitely.
Earlier this year, Odisha Police intercepted three buses in Andhra Pradesh on 29 September and arrested 114 applicants and three middlemen. The Crime Branch later nabbed the accused mastermind, Sankar Prusty, along with key associates.
The central intervention aims to uncover the full extent of the fraud and hold any conspirators—state or national levels—accountable.
