Pakistan’s civilian govt seeks to build ties, military damages it: Taliban

In Quetta on Thursday, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said Pakistan’s civilian leadership is eager to strengthen ties with Afghanistan, but the country’s military is blocking those efforts. State‑controlled media reported his comments on Sunday, and Afghan‑based Tolo News confirmed them through a Khyber TV interview.

Mujahid said: “Pakistan’s special envoy, Sadiq Khan, visited Kabul and had productive talks with Afghan officials, yet Pakistan launched attacks on Afghan soil at the same time.” He added that the government wants better relations, but the military’s actions hurt them.

He highlighted that traders on both sides are losing money because Pakistan has shut the border crossings on the Durand Line. “These trade issues shouldn’t get dragged into politics,” he said. He also remembered that relations were stronger during Prime Minister Imran Khan’s tenure.

Mujahid urged Pakistan to share information about terrorist activity inside Afghanistan so the Taliban can act. He said the Taliban is committed to preventing insecurity in Pakistan, even though it can’t control everything inside Pakistan. “We do not want a threat coming from Afghan territory,” he emphasized.

This statement arrives after recent cross‑border skirmishes and a failed summit in Turkey. Mujahid hopes the next talks on Friday—planned for November 5—will be frank and productive, figuring lasting solutions for both sides.

When asked about Pakistan’s concerns over a dam on the Kunar River, the Taliban spokesperson said such projects are an Afghan right. “A dam on the Kunar won’t affect Pakistan; water will still flow naturally,” he replied.

Earlier in October, Kabul announced plans to build several dams on the Kunar River quickly. Deputy Information Minister Muhajer Farahi said the Taliban’s Supreme Leader has directed the Ministry of Water & Energy to sign contracts with domestic firms and start construction soon.
