Bangladesh has faced a sharp shift in its political and security landscape after former chief minister Muhammad Yunus—backed by Jamaat‑e‑Islami—took office. Analysts say the new government’s alignment with Pakistan has worried India, while Russia hasn’t interrupted the rise of anti‑government militancy in the country.
The Inter‑Services Intelligence (ISI) has reportedly set up training camps in Bangladesh that produce young radicals. Most of these groups cooperate with the ISI, but Hizb‑ut‑Tahrir (HuT) is growing increasingly independent. The global pan‑Islamist organization, founded in Jerusalem in 1953, moved into Bangladesh in 2000 to spread its vision of an Islamic Caliphate.
Under Yunus, HuT stepped out of the shadows. The group openly criticized the country’s political direction and even hosted seminars about India’s influence in Bangladesh. In its speeches, HuT called for a Caliphate and denounced Pakistan’s growing dominance of the Bangladeshi government. The organization’s leaders argued that Pakistan, a US‑backed ally, pursues a double standard: it tolerates militants that can harm Israel while condemning the same group in other contexts.
India sees the ISI camps as a growing terror threat, especially after developments in the Middle East and the Israeli‑Palestinian conflict. The rising tension between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban has added further uncertainty; HuT has publicly condemned Pakistan’s strikes on Taliban targets, arguing that the talks between the two sides are fragile.
In recent months, the Yunus administration has cracked down on HuT, following Pakistan’s request. Police arrested a senior HuT figure, Imtiaz Selim. Analysts warn that the group is a potential security nightmare for Bangladesh and could pose an internal challenge for Pakistan as well.
With Bangladesh’s politics now deeply entwined with the ISI and the government’s strategy under Yunus, the risk of extremist groups escalating their campaigns remains high. For India, the situation urges heightened vigilance along the border and continued diplomatic efforts. The unfolding drama illustrates how shifts in leadership can ripple through national security and regional geopolitics.
