Palestine’s Foreign Ministry is celebrating a major milestone after Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom officially recognized the State of Palestine as an independent nation. They called the move a bold step that aligns with international law and key United Nations resolutions on Palestinian statehood.
In a post on X from Palestine’s Mission to the United Nations, the ministry expressed deep gratitude. “We welcome and thank the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia for recognizing the State of Palestine,” the statement read. “These decisions show real courage and support for global legitimacy.”
The announcements came on Sunday, September 21, 2025, marking a coordinated push by the three allies to boost efforts for a two-state solution—the long-standing plan for peace between Israel and Palestine.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong shared the news in a joint statement. “Starting today, Australia formally recognizes the independent and sovereign State of Palestine,” they said. “This honors the Palestinian people’s rightful dream of their own nation. Our move, alongside Canada and the UK, aims to spark fresh momentum for a two-state solution. It begins with an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages from the October 7, 2023, attacks.”
Albanese and Wong emphasized Australia’s firm support for the two-state path as the only way to lasting peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians. They also highlighted clear conditions: The Palestinian Authority must continue recognizing Israel’s right to exist, commit to democratic elections, and push reforms in finance, governance, and education. They stressed that the terrorist group Hamas has no place in a future Palestinian state.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the recognition in a video on X. “Today, to bring back hope for peace between Palestinians and Israelis through a two-state solution, the United Kingdom formally recognizes the State of Palestine,” he said.
In Canada, Prime Minister Mark Carney echoed the sentiment, framing the decision as a stand against obstacles to Palestinian statehood. “The current Israeli government is systematically blocking any chance for a Palestinian state,” Carney stated. “It has expanded illegal settlements in the West Bank and launched a relentless assault in Gaza, killing tens of thousands of civilians, displacing over a million people, and sparking a preventable famine—all in violation of international law. Now, it’s their open policy: no Palestinian state.”
Carney added that Canada’s recognition offers a partnership for a peaceful future for both Palestine and Israel. “We’re joining this international effort to keep the two-state solution alive,” he said. “It’s no magic fix, but it upholds self-determination and human rights from the UN Charter—core to Canada’s policy for generations.”
These recognitions come amid ongoing tensions in the Israel-Palestine conflict, including the war in Gaza, and signal growing global support for Palestinian aspirations.
