Pune to host ‘Run for Unity’ mega marathon on November 2 to mark Sardar Patel’s 150th birth anniversary

Pune is set to host the Run for Unity marathon on November 2, marking the 150th birthday of India’s iron‑man Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Union Minister for Civil Aviation and cooperation Murlidhar Mohol announced the event on Thursday, saying the race will be launched from SP College on Tilak Road.
The run, organised by Sanskriti Pratishthan, is a celebration of fitness, unity and national harmony. Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi made Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary a National Unity Day in 2014, cities across India – Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Hyderabad and more – have hosted yearly Run for Unity marathons. This year, Pune will take the lead for the first time.
Around 20,000 runners are expected, including elite athletes from Kenya, Ethiopia and other countries, along with India’s top marathoners. Winners in the 21‑km half‑marathon will share a total of ₹10 lakhs prize money, with ₹1 lakh awarded to the best male and female finishers.
Participation is free, but runners must register in advance using the QR code provided by organisers. The marathon will feature four categories: a 21‑km half‑marathon, a competitive 10‑km run, a 5‑km fun run and a 3‑km family‑friendly run.
Minister Mohol urged residents of Pune and all of Maharashtra to sign up, run together and help advance the vision of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat – “One India, Great India”. The event promises a spirited showcase of national unity and healthy living.
