PM Modi condoles demise of Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh
Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his deep sorrow on Wednesday over the passing of Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al-Sheikh. The respected Islamic scholar died on Tuesday at age 82, leaving a lasting mark on religious leadership in the Kingdom.
In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), Modi wrote: “Deepest condolences on the sad demise of the Grand Mufti of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, His Eminence Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al AlSheikh. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Kingdom and its people in this moment of grief.”
Saudi Arabia’s Royal Court announced the news through the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on Tuesday local time. They noted his key roles as head of the General Presidency for Scholarly Research and Ifta, along with the Supreme Council of the Muslim World League.
Born on November 30, 1943, in Makkah, Sheikh Abdulaziz faced tough times early on. He lost his parents at age seven but memorized the entire Quran as a young boy. Even after going blind in his twenties, he pushed forward with his religious studies, diving deep into Sharia law. He later joined academic councils at top Saudi universities and climbed to the nation’s highest clerical post.
Modi appointed as Grand Mufti in 1999, Sheikh Abdulaziz served as Saudi Arabia’s top religious authority for more than two decades. He issued important fatwas and shaped Islamic jurisprudence that influenced society across the Kingdom.
His funeral prayer will take place at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh right after the Asr prayer. By royal order, Muslims will also hold prayers in absentia at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, and mosques throughout Saudi Arabia.
The Royal Court remembered him as a true devotee of Islam, someone who spent his life guiding Muslims and building a powerful legacy in Islamic scholarship.
