Prime Minister Narendra Modi called U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday, October 9, to praise the U.S. “historic” Gaza peace plan and to talk about the progress in India‑U.S. trade talks.
Modi posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter: “I spoke to my friend, President Trump, and congratulated him on the success of the historic Gaza peace plan. We also reviewed the good progress in trade negotiations. We will keep close contact in the coming weeks.” The two leaders repeated earlier friendliness—Trump had called Modi on September 16 to wish him a happy 75th birthday.
The call came after Israel and Hamas agreed on the first phase of Trump’s proposed peace deal, a win that drew praise from both heads of state. Trump responded on Truth Social, calling the conversation “wonderful” and noting, “I wished the Indian PM a very happy birthday. He’s doing a tremendous job.” The two presidents have been calling each other twice in 30 days, signaling a warming relationship.
Trade talks have also taken new momentum. Earlier in September, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal met U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer at the UN General Assembly. Goyal’s office said the meeting was “constructive,” and both sides agreed to keep working for a quick, mutually beneficial deal. Greer called the Indian approach “pragmatic” and said India is engaged in “real conversations” about tariffs and trade codes.
While the trade talks continue, the U.S. State Department’s Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Foreign Minister S Jaishankar in September. Rubio said India is “of critical value” to the U.S. and welcomed ongoing trade talks, while Jaishankar posted on X that the conversation covered a wide range of issues and highlighted the need for sustained engagement.
With the Gaza peace plan and renewed trade negotiations, India‑U.S. relations look steadier after months of tension. The two sides seem ready to keep the dialogue flowing and move toward a comprehensive partnership that benefits both countries.
