New Delhi, Johannesburg – 23 Nov 2023 (LatestNewsX) – Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a brief encounter with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali during the sidelines of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg. In a recent post on X, Modi highlighted the enduring ties between the two nations and their shared intention to deepen cooperation across several key areas.

“Met Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali of Ethiopia during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg. India and Ethiopia share a partnership rooted in history and strengthened by developmental cooperation. We will keep boosting ties in sectors like technology, skilling, and more,” PM Modi wrote.

While the specifics of their discussion have not yet been disclosed, the Prime Minister’s remarks underscore India’s ongoing commitment to its relationship with Ethiopia, one of Africa’s largest economies and a longstanding ally in capacity‑building, trade, and development initiatives.

India and Ethiopia have maintained diplomatic relations for over seven decades. Ethiopia is a prominent recipient of Indian Lines of Credit across the continent, funding projects such as power transmission, rural electrification, railways, and agriculture‑related infrastructure. Indian firms are also invested in Ethiopian fields ranging from manufacturing and textiles to pharmaceuticals and information technology.

Both countries routinely interact through the India‑Africa Forum Summit framework, bilateral joint commissions, and development partnerships. India has delivered extensive training programmes to Ethiopian professionals under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) scheme, covering areas like IT, governance, public administration, health care, and vocational skills.

Technology collaboration and skill development, which Modi highlighted in his X post, have consistently featured in bilateral cooperation. India has backed digital capacity‑building projects in Ethiopia, including IT training centers and institutions connected to science and engineering education.

The meeting on Saturday came as India continues to broaden its engagement with African partners on multilateral platforms. Ethiopia’s participation followed the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent G20 member during India’s presidency—a step both sides welcomed as it expands Global South representation in global economic governance.

PM Modi’s brief interaction with Abiy Ahmed Ali is part of a series of high‑level exchanges he has held with world leaders over the course of the Summit, which focused on sustainable development, global economic stability, digital cooperation, and multilateral reforms.
