PM Modi meets German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, calls bilateral partnership ‘robust and future-focused’

New Delhi/Johannesburg, Nov 22 (LatestNewsX) – Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Saturday that he had a “wonderful” meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, praising the growing closeness between India and Germany in trade, technology and innovation.
He posted a short note on X, stressing how the two countries are expanding their strategic and economic ties.
“It was wonderful to meet German Chancellor, Mr Friedrich Merz. India’s ties with Germany are robust, especially in areas such as trade, technology, innovation and more,” PM Modi wrote.
The encounter comes as India and Germany deepen cooperation through structures such as the Intergovernmental Consultations, the India‑Germany High Technology Partnership, and joint work on green and digital transitions. Germany is one of India’s biggest trade partners in the EU and a key source of investment, engineering know‑how and high‑tech.
Although the Ministry of External Affairs had not yet released official notes, Modi’s comments suggest that both heads of government examined the current partnership stance and ongoing projects in key areas.
Merz, who took office early this year, has focused on strengthening bonds with major Indo‑Pacific allies. For years India and Germany have kept regular top‑level dialogue through G20, G7, climate talks, supply‑chain resilience, skill development, and cooperation in mobility and migration.
The two sides are also actively collaborating on green hydrogen, renewable power, semiconductor manufacturing and advanced production—fields Japan and Berlin have earmarked as critical for future economic links. Germany has previously joined India in several clean‑energy programmes and backs India’s climate ambitions.
Their cooperation extends further into defence manufacture, vocational training, cyber security, digital governance and academic exchanges, sectors slated to remain high on both agendas.
India and Germany’s strategic partnership has endured for over twenty years, with successive leaders stressing the need to stay close on regional and global issues such as multilateral reform, the rule‑based order and shared democratic values.
The recent meeting reinforces this chain of dialogue, with Modi’s post underscoring New Delhi’s resolve to keep working with Berlin on technology‑driven, innovation‑focused collaboration.
