Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev on Thursday during the World Food India 2025 event in New Delhi. Modi kicked off the event at Bharat Mandapam, where the two leaders chatted about boosting ties between India and Russia in agriculture, fertilizers, food processing, and other key areas.
Modi shared his thoughts on X, saying, “Happy to meet Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev at the World Food India 2025. We discussed ways to strengthen our win-win cooperation in agriculture, fertilizers and food processing.”
He also sent warm greetings to Russian President Vladimir Putin and expressed excitement about hosting him in India for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. With Putin set to visit in December, India-Russia relations look set to stay strong.
Earlier that morning, Modi inaugurated the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show in Noida, highlighting Russia as the partner country. He called it a clear sign of the two nations deepening their long-standing partnership. Russia plays a similar role in World Food India, and Modi noted in his speech how they’re building on that trusted bond.
Meanwhile, the White House has been pushing India to cool its relations with Moscow, particularly by cutting back on Russian crude oil imports. But U.S. officials have hinted at upcoming meetings, like one between President Donald Trump and Modi on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit in Kuala Lumpur from October 26 to 28. Reports also suggest Trump might head to India for the Quad Summit later this year or early 2026.
Patrushev, who oversees Russia’s agriculture and agro-products, is in India this week to strengthen these links.
In his Noida speech, Modi turned to defense matters, praising the government’s push for homegrown production. He spotlighted Uttar Pradesh’s big role, including a new defense corridor that’s already producing BrahMos missiles. “Very soon, production of AK-203 rifles will start from the factory we built with Russia,” Modi added, emphasizing India-Russia defense cooperation.
The trade show drew massive crowds: over 2,400 exhibitors, 125,000 business visitors, and 450,000 everyday shoppers. An official statement said Russia’s involvement adds real weight, opening doors for trade, tech sharing, and lasting partnerships.
On the energy front, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Wednesday in New York that America wants deeper energy ties with India in natural gas, coal, and nuclear power. But he was clear: “You can buy oil from every nation on Earth, just not Russian oil. That’s our position.”
Modi wrapped up his Noida talk by touting tax cuts under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) that are saving people money. He pushed for buying local “swadeshi” products and doubled down on the government’s self-reliance drive, or Atmanirbhar Bharat. “There’s no greater helplessness than depending on others,” he said. “In a changing world, relying too much on others holds back growth. India won’t do that anymore.”
