Chennai:
Malayalam filmmaker Tharun Moorthy—whose recent Mohanlal‑starrer Thudaram has blown up at the box office—has just revealed that he’s reuniting with the star for a new movie.
On his X timeline, Tharun said, “When a storyteller and a legend meet again, a universe stirs. After ‘Thudarum’, I and @Mohanlal embark on another voyage, carried by the vision of Ashiq Usman Productions. Rolling Soon…” He added that the project will be produced by Ashiq Usman Productions.
The news sent waves of excitement through the fan base, with many asking whether the next film will continue the story from one of Tharun’s earlier works.
The speculation has roots in an earlier Onam announcement. Tharun had posted that “Happy Onam. This Onam is truly special for me. As an artist, as a filmmaker, and as a human being, I’m cherishing every moment of artistic ecstasy. We are now in serious discussions about a sequel to one of my projects. Some personal meetings and real-life incidents still inspire me to bring it back. This is not official yet—and in some ways, it already feels official.” He went on, “It was during an Onam season, when I was completely blank, that a door first opened before me. And this Onam, I couldn’t let that signal fade away. Yes, I’ve started writing again – this time, the second part of one of my films. I’ll share more official updates soon. Be with us. As always.”
With the new partnership announced, fans are asking if the film will be the sequel to the blockbuster Thudarum.
For those who may not know, Thudarum is a crime‑action drama featuring Mohanlal opposite Shobana. The collaboration drew major buzz for a number of reasons. First, it marked the reunion of two of Malayalam cinema’s most beloved on‑screen pairings after nearly two decades. Their joint legacy includes classics like Manichithrathazhu, Thenmavi Kombathu, and Mambazhakkalam. Second, the film turned out to be Mohanlal’s 360th release and his 56th with Shobana.
The movie shattered expectations, pulling in more than ₹100 crore from Kerala alone—an unprecedented haul for a regional film. Mohanlal himself chimed in on social media, sharing a poster that read, “A new chapter in Kerala box office history. A 100 crore Kerala gross.” He added, “#Thudarum storms into the record books with its first 100 crore mark exclusively at the Kerala box office! A milestone that we created together! Thank you, Kerala.”
The star’s reaction showed his gratitude: he posted, “I’m deeply moved and truly humbled by the love and heartfelt response for #Thudarum. Each message and every word of appreciation has touched me in ways I can’t fully express.” He went on, “Thank you for opening your hearts to this story, for seeing its soul, and for embracing it with such grace. This gratitude is not mine alone. It belongs to every single person who walked this journey with me, giving their love, effort, and spirit to every frame. To Renjith M, Tharun Moorthy, KR Sunil, Shobhana, Binu Pappu, Prakash Varma, Shaji Kumar, Jakes Bejoy and our extraordinary team – your artistry and passion made Thudarum what it is.”
Finally, he reflected on the film’s impact: “The actor pointed out that Thudarum was made with care, with purpose, and above all, with truth. To see it resonate so deeply is more than a reward. It is a true blessing. With all my heart, thank you. with love and gratitude always.”
