Officials release cause of death for newlywed couple found in car just days before anniversary
A police officer in Harvard, Illinois, stopped a car on October 6 after seeing its hazard lights on. Inside the vehicle he found 29‑year‑old Rachel Dumovich and 30‑year‑old Brandon Dumovich, both dead.
The McHenry County Coroner’s Office said their preliminary findings point to gunshot wounds to the head. A handgun was recovered from the scene, and the county’s Major Investigative Assistance Team has been called in.
Harvard Police Chief Tyson Bauman told Fox News Digital that investigators are still looking into the case. “A murder‑suicide is a possible scenario, but no final determination has been made,” he said.
The couple, who come from Sharon, Wisconsin, were newlyweds. Rachel and Brandon met in middle school when Rachel stole cologne from Brandon’s locker, a story she shared on a wedding page on The Knot. After a 15‑year friendship, they started dating in 2022 and married on October 12, 2024, after Brandon proposed at Big Cedar Lake in summer 2023.
Hours before the tragic find, Rachel had posted a photo on Facebook wishing it were the couple’s honeymoon in Greece. She had written, “Forever chasing sunsets.”
The autopsy report is still pending, and the full details of the investigation haven’t been released. Police advised residents to stay inside after the discovery, but later said there is no ongoing threat to the community.
