Rajnath Singh kicked off his landmark two-day visit to Morocco by connecting with the Indian community in Rabat. As India’s Defence Minister, he praised their hard work and dedication, highlighting how they boost Morocco’s growth while staying true to their Indian roots.
This trip marks the first time an Indian Defence Minister has visited the North African country. It shows how India and Morocco are building stronger strategic ties, especially in defence and industry.
On X (formerly Twitter), Singh shared his thoughts: “Delighted to interact with the Indian community in Rabat. Lauded their hard work and dedication that defines the Indian community across the world. It is praiseworthy, how they are contributing to Morocco’s progress and at the same time remain connected to their roots in India.”
His office added that Singh talked about India’s big changes over the past decade—from economic growth and manufacturing to tech, startups, digital advances, and defence strength. The Indian diaspora in Morocco expressed pride in India’s rising global role.
The visit comes at the invitation of Morocco’s Minister Delegate for National Defence, Abdeltif Loudiyi. It focuses on ramping up defence cooperation, strategic partnerships, and industrial links between the two nations.
A key moment will be the launch of Tata Advanced Systems Maroc’s new factory in Berrechid. This plant will make the Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) 8×8, becoming the first Indian defence manufacturing site in Africa. It’s a win for India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat push to boost self-reliance and exports.
Singh plans to hold talks with Loudiyi on bilateral issues and meet Morocco’s Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, to find fresh ways to team up on industry projects.
India and Morocco expect to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Defence Cooperation. This deal will set up formal steps for more training, exchanges, and business ties in defence.
Defence ties between the countries have picked up speed since King Mohammed VI met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India back in 2015. This visit should inject new energy into the partnership, particularly in defence and strategy, according to India’s Defence Ministry.
India’s naval links with Morocco are also on the rise, with Indian Navy ships making regular stops at Casablanca. The new MoU should solidify these maritime connections even more.
