India has appointed Raj Kamal, a 2009-batch Indian Foreign Service officer currently serving at the Consulate General in Milan, as its next ambassador to Eritrea. He will soon head to the East African nation to take up the role, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
India quickly recognized Eritrea after it gained independence from Ethiopia on May 24, 1993. The two countries share deep historical roots—Indian traders knew the Eritrean port of Massawa as far back as the 17th century. During World War II, Indian soldiers fought bravely in the key battles of Keren and Asmara, suffering heavy losses. Today, memorials honor their sacrifice: the Keren Cremation Memorial remembers 285 Indian soldiers cremated per their traditions, while the Keren War Cemetery marks 73 burials, and the Asmara War Cemetery honors 16 more.
India continues to strengthen ties with Eritrea through practical support. Over the years, New Delhi has offered capacity-building help in areas like legislative drafting and technical scholarships in agriculture, education, health, and handicrafts. For the 2024-25 academic year, India has allocated 12 scholarships to Eritrean students under the India-Africa Maitri Scholarship Scheme.
Last year in May, Indian and Eritrean officials met in Delhi for their second round of Foreign Office Consultations. They focused on expanding developmental cooperation and capacity building, embracing the spirit of South-South collaboration to boost India-Eritrea relations.
