Canberra, Dec 12 (LatestNewsX) – Reddit has taken the Australian Government to the High Court, arguing that the country’s pioneering ban on under‑16 users is being applied incorrectly to its platform. In documents filed last Friday, the company claimed that Reddit’s primary focus is adult discussion and that it does not include the “traditional” social‑media features the legislation targets. Reddit said it would continue to follow the restrictions, but it warned that the law forces invasive and potentially unsafe verification procedures on adults as well as minors.
The firm also argued the law is ineffective, explaining that younger children could be better protected by using safety controls on an account rather than a blanket ban. “Despite the best intentions, this law is missing the mark on actually protecting young people online. So, while we will comply with this law, we have a responsibility to share our perspective and see that it is reviewed by the courts,” it added.
The ban, which took effect Wednesday, covers ten major platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and X—Reddit is one of those that must guard against users under 16. The legislation requires platforms to take “reasonable steps” to prevent such accounts, and serious violations may attract penalties up to 49.5 million Australian dollars ($32.9 million).
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed students across the country on Tuesday in a video message, explaining that the policy change is meant to support kids who have grown up with endless social‑media feeds, algorithms and the accompanying pressures. He urged them to enjoy the upcoming school break, suggesting new hobbies and face‑to‑face time with friends and family.
The Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Bill 2024, passed by federal parliament in November, introduced the requirement that certain social‑media platforms must prevent children under 16 from opening accounts.
