South Korean officials have flown into Phnom Penh to tackle a growing wave of job‑scam victims who have been kidnapped and held hostage in Cambodia.
The diplomatic mission, led by Second Vice Foreign Minister Kim Ji‑na, arrived late Wednesday at Techo International Airport, bringing together staff from the National Policy Agency, the Ministry of Justice and the National Intelligence Service.
Kim said the team will meet Cambodian leaders to hammer out a joint investigation into the kidnapping and forced labor of South Korean workers. The government wants to help bring its citizens back home and holds them accountable through Korean courts.
South Korea currently has 61 Koreans detained by Cambodian immigration authorities accused of organising crime. Two of the detainees were flown out of Cambodia on Tuesday, bringing the number of “job‑scam” victims down to 63. Seoul seeks a special flight to repatriate the rest—ideally by Friday, according to a senior security adviser, Wi Sung‑lac.
“Details are still being worked out,” Kim told reporters at the airport. “But we’re doing everything we can to bring our people home.”
The mission will also touch on a separate case where a South Korean woman was found dead near the Cambodia‑Vietnam border. Her family suspects a phishing scheme tied to Cambodian scammers. Vietnamese and Cambodian authorities are looking into the death.
South Korean police have already booked the detainees for illegal labour, and Seoul is pushing for a quick return. The focus is clear: stop job‑scam schemes, protect South Korean citizens and bring those responsible to justice.
