Rights body spotlights rampant human rights abuse by Pakistani forces in Balochistan

Balochistan’s Human Rights Crisis: Enforced Disappearances and State Repression Grip the Region

A prominent human rights group has sounded the alarm on the dire situation in Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest province. Baloch Voice for Justice (BVJ) says enforced disappearances, fake encounters leading to extrajudicial killings, and other serious abuses by Pakistani forces have turned into a scary everyday reality here. This comes right after UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk’s strong warning at the ongoing 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council: "No one is safe when human rights are under attack."

BVJ backs the UN’s call and points fingers at the Pakistani military for targeting Baloch people purely because of their ethnic and linguistic identity. No one escapes the crackdown—students, lawyers, activists, women, traders, and even transport workers face constant threats to their lives and freedoms across Balochistan.

"Basic rights like freedom of speech, assembly, movement, and religion are getting crushed," BVJ said in a statement. Internet blackouts have hit several areas for months, while major cities like Quetta see partial restrictions. Peaceful protests and human rights rallies? They’re often banned outright.

The group highlighted the rising violence against women and enforced disappearances of females. One heartbreaking case is that of Mahjabeen, a polio-affected student who’s been missing for over two and a half months. Her family has no clue about her whereabouts.

Life’s getting tougher on the economic front too. Cross-border trade, vital for families near the borders, stands completely blocked. This has pushed thousands into poverty and despair in Balochistan. Schools and hospitals? They’re in terrible shape, thanks to years of neglect that screams marginalization.

BVJ calls this a "double blow" for the Baloch people: brutal state repression that attacks their identity, plus policies of economic and social exclusion that feel like structural genocide.

As the UN Human Rights Council session rolls on, BVJ urges global rights groups and defenders to spotlight Balochistan’s worsening crisis. They want the international community to speak up and act fast—hold the culprits accountable and protect the Baloch people’s dignity. Silence isn’t an option when human rights violations in Balochistan are this severe.
