Quetta – A human‑rights group based in Balochistan has warned that the region is facing a sharp rise in forced disappearances, killings and torture by Pakistani security forces.
Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) released a report titled “Human Rights Situation in Balochistan” on Saturday, detailing abuses that occurred between July and August. The committee says the Pakistani government is tightening control over the area with both force and legal pressure.
Enforced disappearances
The report lists 182 people who vanished during the two‑month period. The numbers fell 80 in July and rose to 102 in August. Only 38 of them have been released. Seventy‑two percent of the victims are missing with no trace. Among those gone are 40 students, 15 minors and one woman. Quetta, Kech and Awaran districts recorded the highest numbers, with the Frontier Corps cited as a main culprit.
Extrajudicial killings
The committee records 29 people killed in July and August, mainly through target killings, custodial shooting and “kill‑and‑dump” tactics. Kech, Awaran and Khuzdar districts saw the most cases. About 59 percent of killings were attributed to Pakistan‑backed death squads, and 21 percent to the armed forces. In a shocking incident, two children were hit by mortar shells during a civilian attack.
Torture and mutilation
Bodies of Baloch youth found on roads were often mutilated, suggesting torture while they were in custody. The report says students, minorities, and other civilians are being targeted. Kech and Awaran recorded the most tortured and mutilated bodies.
Collective punishment
The BYC says the state is using force and law to crush resistance. Families of political workers and rights activists are being targeted, and civilian bombardments have continued.
International law violations
The committee says the actions break Pakistan’s commitments under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Convention Against Torture and the Geneva Conventions—all treaties Pakistan has signed.
Call for global action
The BYC urges the United Nations and the wider international community to step in. “We need decisive action to stop impunity and protect the rights of the Baloch people,” the group said.
The report highlights a growing crisis in Balochistan that demands urgent international attention and accountability.
