In a recent interview, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said there’s no rush to arrange a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump. Peskov told reporters that while a summit could be set up quickly, it’s not necessary right now. He added that the focus should be on detailed work around the Ukraine settlement.
The comment comes after Trump canceled a planned summit in Budapest that had been announced in mid‑October. Trump said the meeting “just didn’t feel right” and that it wouldn’t help reach a crucial outcome. Putin, meanwhile, said the meeting had more likely been postponed than cancelled, pointing out that the U.S. had initiated the summit.
Earlier on Oct. 26, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said any future high‑level talks would depend on the U.S. side. The leaders last met in person on Aug. 15, 2025, at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. That meeting ended without an agreement on a ceasefire or a clear path to ending the war, even though it was their first face‑to‑face encounter since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
