Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack on Lviv, Ukraine, early Sunday, near the Polish border. The raid left the city in chaos for nearly four hours and forced Poland to fire up its air patrols.
Lviv sits just 43 miles from Poland. Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said the city was hit by missiles and drones all night. Air‑defence guns fired in all directions, and the sound of explosions kept coming. “It’s the worst hit Lviv has seen since the war began,” a witness told The Post. “We’ve been under a massive attack for about four hours, and it still continues.”
Witnesses described black smoke, a foul smell, and the buzz of drones overhead. Air‑defence systems stayed online, with more drones spotted in the air as the city tried to protect itself.
Polish officials reacted quickly. On Monday morning, Poland’s operational command posted on X that they had increased air patrols after Russian drones were seen over several NATO countries. “Polish and allied aircraft are operating in our airspace, while ground‑based air‑defence and radar reconnaissance systems are on the highest state of readiness,” the post read. “These actions are preventive and aim to protect our citizens, especially near the threatened region.”
The latest wave of attacks has rattled NATO’s eastern allies. In September, Poland shot down at least four Russian drones that had entered its airspace, out of an estimated 19 to 23 intruders. Estonia said NATO intercepted three Russian MiG‑31 fighters that had been in its airspace for about 12 minutes, and Romania reported a Russian drone breaching its airspace a few days later.
After these incidents, former U.S. President Donald Trump warned that the U.S. would intervene if Russia’s aggression escalated. The United States has urged NATO allies to stay vigilant.
The nonstop drone and missile barrage over Lviv, a key Ukrainian city, illustrates how the conflict continues to shake the region. Polish jets are on standby, and NATO air‑defence networks remain alert as the situation develops.
