Russia’s military said it just finished a successful test of a new nuclear‑armed cruise missile that the Kremlin is now calling “invincible.” President Vladimir Putin posted a video of the launch, wearing army fatigues, and urged his top general to start “setting up the infrastructure for deploying these weapons” so they can be sent to the armed forces if needed.
The missile is known in Russian as Burevestnik and NATO has dubbed it Skyfall. It promises a flight time of about 15 hours and a range of roughly 8,700 miles, meaning it could reach cities like New York or Washington, D.C. The Kremlin says the missile can’t be intercepted by current or future defense systems because of its unpredictable trajectory.
Putin highlighted the test in a short clip that the U.S. Trump administration has already learned about. He follows a week of larger‑scale nuclear drills that included launches from Russia’s intercontinental ballistic missiles and Tu‑95 strategic bombers.
Experts, however, remain skeptical about the missile’s real capabilities. The Burevestnik has struggled in the past, with only two successful tests out of 13 attempts, according to the Nuclear Threat Initiative. A 2019 incident even killed five engineers and two service members during a test at a naval base.
Despite the doubts, the Kremlin says it can deploy this “doomsday” weapon against any nation backed by a nuclear power, a stark warning to NATO and the United States for their support of Ukraine.
In short, Russia is pushing forward with a nuclear cruise missile that it claims can fly far and is hard to detect, but independent analysts question whether it can live up to those claims.
