Russia’s response to a Tomahawk strike would be ‘serious, if not overwhelming’: Putin

Moscow, Oct 24 – Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that any U.S.‑supplied Tomahawk missile launched at Russia would prompt a “serious, even overwhelming” response. His remarks come as Washington considers giving Ukraine the long‑range cruise missile, a move Kyiv says could spark a new escalation.

Putin told reporters that Ukraine’s request for Tomahawks is “an attempt at escalation.” He added that Russia will not hesitate if the missiles strike its territory: “Let them think about that.”

### Dialogue remains on the table

Despite the cancellation of a U.S.‑Russia summit in Budapest, Putin said diplomacy is still the best option. “Dialogue is always better than confrontation or war,” he said. He reminded Americans that the meeting was originally proposed by the U.S., stressing that a postponed summit is a mistake for both sides.

### U.S. sanctions on Russian oil

Washington has slapped new sanctions on Russia’s biggest oil firms, Rosneft and Lukoil. The U.S. aims to limit the Kremlin’s war‑financing ability. Putin dismissed the move as “unfriendly” and “counterproductive.” He warned that the sanctions could lift global oil prices, affecting U.S. customers as well.

The Treasury said the restrictions aim to reduce Russia’s ability to fund aggression. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the sanctions as a step that weakens the Kremlin’s war‑machine.

### Trump’s fallout with Putin

U.S. President Donald Trump, who cancelled a planned Budapest meeting with Putin, criticized his former ally for refusing a ceasefire and for not advancing talks. Trump said he would “cancel meetings if they feel wasted” but remains open to future discussions.

### What this means for the war

Putin’s comments signal that Russia is prepared to defend its borders if the U.S. supplies Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles. The ongoing U.S. sanctions on oil may raise global prices but are unlikely to cripple Russia’s economy, according to Moscow. The war in Ukraine continues, with both sides pushing diplomatic and military strategies.

Key words: Vladimir Putin, Tomahawk strike, Ukraine, U.S. sanctions, Rosneft, Lukoil, Donald Trump, Budapest summit, dialogue, war in Ukraine, global oil prices.
