India and Iceland Strengthen Ties During High-Level Meeting in Reykjavik
Reykjavik, September 4 – India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, met with Iceland’s Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir in Reykjavik. The talks focused on boosting cooperation in key areas like trade, investment, renewable energy, geothermal energy, and fisheries.
Kirti Vardhan Singh expressed enthusiasm for deepening India-Iceland relations. He also applauded Iceland’s strong condemnation of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam that resulted in 26 deaths and injured many others. The two leaders discussed how their countries can work together more closely on shared interests.
After the meeting, Singh shared on X (formerly Twitter): “Pleased to meet Iceland’s Foreign Minister today. Appreciated their condemnation of the Pahalgam terror attack. We reviewed progress in trade, renewable energy, geothermal energy, and fisheries. We also discussed global and regional issues of importance. Looking forward to strengthening our partnership further.”
Singh is in Iceland for a two-day visit to take part in the second India-Nordic Track 1.5 Dialogue. He delivered the keynote speech at the opening session and is scheduled to meet with Iceland’s Parliament Speaker and other officials involved in the dialogue.
Upon arriving in Reykjavik, Singh wrote on X: “Excited to be in Reykjavik for the Nordic-India Dialogue. Looking forward to meaningful discussions and bilateral meetings with Icelandic leaders.”
The Ministry of External Affairs says this visit will boost bilateral relations and foster cooperation between India and the Nordic countries’ research and strategic communities. India and Iceland established diplomatic ties in 1972. Diplomatic missions were opened in New Delhi in 2006 and in Reykjavik in 2008.
India and Iceland share common values like democracy, equality, human rights, and the rule of law. Iceland also supports India’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
This visit highlights ongoing efforts to strengthen India’s international partnerships and deepen cooperation with Nordic nations.
