South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim met in Kuala Lumpur on Monday and sealed a new free‑trade agreement that could boost trade between the two countries. The leaders said they hope the deal will expand economic ties and open fresh opportunities in technology and investment.
During the summit, Lee and Anwar highlighted that the free‑trade deal is a springboard for deeper cooperation in digital technology and artificial intelligence, sectors that both governments consider key to future growth. They also spoke about smart infrastructure and the energy transition, agreeing to widen collaboration in those forward‑looking fields.
The talks went beyond trade. Anwar praised South Korea as a “reliable partner” in Malaysia’s drive to strengthen its defence capabilities. In a separate meeting, the leaders signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on defence industry cooperation. The MOU, signed by South Korea’s Minister of Defence Acquisition Program Administration, Seok Jong‑gun, and Malaysia’s defence chief Mohamed Khaled Nordin, covers joint research and development of defence technologies and the co‑production of weapons systems. This move aims to deepen both countries’ strategic partnership in the defence sector and support regional stability within ASEAN.
Lee also requested Malaysia’s support for South Korea’s peace efforts on the Korean Peninsula, and Anwar assured backing for Seoul’s North Korea policy. The leaders emphasized that Malaysia will work with ASEAN and the international community to promote peace in the region.
In short, the summit delivered a comprehensive free‑trade agreement and a defence‑cooperation MOU, signalling a stronger strategic partnership between South Korea and Malaysia.
