At the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif delivered a fiery speech on Friday that ramped up tensions with India. Sharif warned that Pakistan could strike back if India keeps restricting access to the Indus River waters, labeling it an outright “act of war.” He positioned this as defending Pakistan’s vital water rights, a hot-button issue in South Asia.
Sharif boasted about a “victory” for Pakistan in a recent May clash with India, speaking from what he called a place of strength. But behind the scenes, it was Pakistan’s top military officer, Major General Kashif Abdullah, who reached out to his Indian counterpart, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, to push for a ceasefire. Throughout his address, Sharif heaped praise on Pakistan’s military leaders, hinting they’re the true forces steering the country.
He didn’t stop there—Sharif also singled out world leaders for props. He thanked former U.S. President Donald Trump for supposedly preventing a “catastrophic” war between India and Pakistan, which Sharif said is why his government nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. Sharif gave a nod to Trump’s recent UN meetings with leaders from Arab nations and Muslim-majority countries, calling them a positive step.
Turning to China, Sharif lauded President Xi Jinping for his “vision and foresight,” underscoring the close ties between Islamabad and Beijing that shape Pakistan’s foreign policy.
Sharif then shifted his sharp criticism to Israel, branding it “genocidal” and accusing it of unleashing “unspeakable terror” in the region. He drew parallels between the Kashmir conflict and the Palestinian cause, urging global attention to both. Sharif even referenced a UN Security Council resolution calling for a plebiscite in Kashmir—but he skipped the part that requires Pakistan to pull out its troops, tribesmen, and other intruders first.
The speech highlights ongoing strains over Kashmir, water disputes, and international alliances, drawing eyes from around the world as India-Pakistan relations stay on edge.
