The twin‑engine Cheyenne I twin‑propeller aircraft clipped the earth in an alarming crash just minutes after taking off from Paramillo Airfield in San Cristóbal, a city in Táchira state, Venezuela.
A short video that aviation enthusiasts posted on X shows the 20‑passenger airplane bounding down the runway, then rapidly spinning on its side before spiralling nose‑first into the ground. The impact sent a huge fireball that set the wreckage ablaze while a crowd of onlookers nearby screamed in shock.
The accident, which happened just before 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, killed two passengers—reportedly Toni Bortone and Juan Maldonado—while two others were injured. Emergency crews struggled to reach the wreckage because the intense fire slowed rescue efforts.
Initial reports from Venezuelan media say the pilot lost control after a tire exploded during takeoff, leading to the violent loss of balance. The aircraft was believed to be operating on behalf of the government’s logistics operations, but the exact cause remains under investigation.
Authorities are looking into whether a mechanical failure, human error, or external factors such as runway conditions contributed to the tragedy. The investigation will also review the airplane’s maintenance record and the airfield’s safety protocols.
