Singapore’s Consul General Cheong Ming Foong visited Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav at his Bhopal residence on Wednesday, sparking talks on boosting trade ties between Singapore and the Indian state.
The two leaders focused on strengthening their economic partnership, reviewing current collaborations and eyeing fresh opportunities. Chief Minister Yadav shared on his X account that the meeting delved into investment prospects for Madhya Pradesh, calling it a productive courtesy call.
The Singapore Embassy echoed the enthusiasm on X, noting discussions on expanding partnerships. They highlighted ongoing work in skills development and renewable energy, while exploring exciting new avenues for collaboration.
Madhya Pradesh is eager for major investments from Singapore-based companies, especially in green energy. This interest dates back to 2024, when Singapore’s High Commissioner to India, Simon Wang, met Yadav and pitched ideas for such projects. Last year, during the state’s Regional Industrial Conclave in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh also received a direct investment proposal from Singapore.
These talks build on high-level India-Singapore exchanges. Prime Minister Narendra Modi traveled to Singapore last year, meeting leaders like Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong. Modi also connected with top business figures and toured AEM, a key Singapore firm in the semiconductor industry.
Earlier this year, from January 14 to 18, Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam made a state visit to India. Joined by Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat and Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sim Ann, he held talks with President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Modi, and several Indian cabinet ministers. After Delhi, Tharman headed to Odisha, where multiple memorandums of understanding were inked between state entities and Singapore companies. These deals covered fintech, skills training, green energy, and industrial parks, further solidifying economic links.
