Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong Visits India to Strengthen Ties and Pay Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is on a special three-day visit to India, marking an important step in strengthening the close bonds between the two countries. During his trip, Wong paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi by laying a wreath at Raj Ghat, Gandhi’s memorial in New Delhi. This gesture highlights the deep respect for Gandhi’s principles of truth and non-violence, which continue to inspire both nations.

Wong shared photos of his visit to Raj Ghat on social media, emphasizing the significance of Gandhi’s ideals in today’s world. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) praised his tribute, saying, “PM Lawrence Wong of Singapore paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat. Bapu’s universal ideals of truth and non-violence inspire us all.”

The Singapore Prime Minister’s visit also included important meetings with Indian officials. On Tuesday, he met with India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. During their talks, they discussed the outcomes of the recent 3rd India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable and explored ways to boost cooperation on cross-border data sharing and investment in capital markets.

Wong tweeted about their meeting, saying, “Glad to reconnect with India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. We discussed the recent India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable and our interest in working together on digital data flows and financial markets.” He added that “there’s great potential for Singapore and India to strengthen our financial and digital links.”

Wong’s visit is part of a major effort to deepen strategic partnerships. It is his first official trip to India since becoming Prime Minister. He arrived on Tuesday along with his wife and a team of senior officials and ministers. His visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of India-Singapore diplomatic relations, making it especially meaningful.

Upon arriving in New Delhi, Wong shared on X (formerly Twitter), “Arrived in India for this important visit. Celebrating 60 years of friendly relations between Singapore and India. Thankful for the warm reception from Indian Minister of State for Finance.” He expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming days of discussions and engagement in New Delhi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to meet Wong on Thursday for bilateral talks. Wong will also meet with President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan and hold discussions with other key Indian officials, including External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. The leaders are expected to sign several agreements covering finance, digital innovation, skill development, civil aviation, maritime cooperation, and space technology.

The MEA highlighted the importance of this visit, stating, “Singapore is a key partner for India as part of our ‘Act East’ Policy.” The upcoming visit of Prime Minister Modi to Singapore in September 2024 will further enhance the special ties, elevating the relationship to a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”

As India and Singapore celebrate six decades of diplomatic relations, this visit underlines their strong commitment to working together on regional and global issues. Both nations aim to deepen cooperation and explore new opportunities across various sectors for a brighter future.
