South Africa is bracing for a big weather event as a strong cut‑off low‑pressure system moves across the country. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) says heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds will hit from Sunday into early Monday.
The storm could bring 100 to 150 mm of rain in some areas, plus intense thunderstorms and high winds. SAWS has issued an orange warning (level 9) for Gauteng and western Mpumalanga, warning that disruptive rainfall could flood roads, settlements and create life‑threatening running water. Limpopo and parts of Mpumalanga are under an orange level 6 alert for severe thunderstorms, gusty winds and heavy rain, while KwaZulu‑Natal is on a yellow level 4 warning.
The North West, Northern Cape and Free State provinces also carry an orange level 5 warning. Flooding of low‑lying roads and bridges and damage to infrastructure are possible.
The storm is expected to linger through Monday. SAWS warns that flooding, dangerous driving conditions, damage to roads and bridges, and disruptions to essential services could all occur.
Citizens are urged to keep up with SAWS updates on its website and social media, and to follow local authorities’ instructions. The colour‑and‑number warning system gives quick insight: yellow signals minor to moderate risk, orange means a significant threat, and red denotes extreme danger. The number (1‑10) indicates the likelihood of the event.
Stay safe, stay informed, and check local alerts regularly as the storm rolls in.
