Gyeongju, South Korea – Police are locking down the city in a big‑scale drill ahead of the APEC summit that starts on October 31. The exercise, run by the Presidential Security Service, aims to protect the motorcades of leaders from APEC member countries.
Police didn’t reveal how many officers or vehicles are in the drill, citing operational security. Last month the police practiced with about 600 personnel and 190 patrol cars. Today, they set up more drills that involve special forces, drones, and detection dogs around the Gyeongju Hwabaek Convention Centre, where the summit will be held.
The Coast Guard has positioned troops around Bomun Lake in the Bomun Tourist Complex, the summit’s main venue, and has increased security along the coast of Gyeongju and nearby Pohang.
On the opening day, police plan to deploy anti‑drone gear, armored vehicles, and helicopters. A total of up to 18,500 officers will be on duty every day for security, traffic control and crowd management.
The summit will host 15 rallies, both right‑wing and left‑wing. Police expect about 10,000 participants. Rallies will be allowed near the convention centre until Friday, but will be stopped inside the Bomun Tourist Complex from Saturday onward. Civic groups are being asked to hold their events at other city locations during the summit.
On October 28, the Gyeongbuk Provincial Police and Busan Metropolitan Police will raise their alert level, giving them permission to mobilise all officers under their command for the APEC period.
